Out of Witbank comes the sound of 4 guys screaming hello to the world. They were unassuming, humble and willing to work hard at their craft. They called themselves Prime Circle and at that stage in 2003 none of us had any idea just how big this band could get in little less than a year. The single “Hello Hello” went out to campus stations across South Africa and soon you were flipping stations hearing the song everywhere. It became the anthem of that year and one of South Africa’s biggest rock acts were well on their way.
That’s a quick introduction, although none is needed as I don’t think there is a single person in this country that hasn’t heard at least one of their songs.
They released their first album Hello Crazy World in 2003 which went on to sell in excess of 25 000 copies in a short period of time containing the hits “As long as you are here”, “Hello Hello”, “Let me go” and “My Inspiration”.
Then two years later after gigging constantly, clocking 350 appearances in 18 months and appearing at every major event, they released their second album “Live This Life” which had a harder rock feel and spawned a whole bunch of hits proving that they were going to be around for a while.
So after two albums and a DVD, a greatest hits CD is released, something that may seem a little silly. Regardless, “The Best Of” has a nice mix of acoustic versions of the songs, as well as a few remixes, and of course the big songs that made them famous. If you don’t own a Prime Circle album, this is the one to get. It’s got well, “The Best Of” and they’ve included the DVD for free which has a live performance. Good value from a great band. New single Moments will make you wonder which TV advert features the song… it’s still on TV, so see if you can spot it. The Café d’Afrique mix of As Long as I’m Here has gotta be one of the smoothest songs ever and just keeps on sounding fresh no matter how many times you hear it.
Stay tuned to the Prime Circle space. They have a brand new album coming out next year, which lead singer Ross says “is going to be our best in terms of the songs and sound”. Till then, this will do as their best! |
