Think critical entertainment in the naughty nineties, and then add names like Austin Powers “International Man of Mystery”, Barbie Girl’s appearance on the music scene, the Simpsons and the only thing missing would beyond a doubt be… The Spice Girls. What would the nineties have been without them?
With 2007 undisputedly tagged the year of the comebacks, from The Eagles to Kylie, yes even the Springboks and the Spice Girls, or should I say Spice Women now all grown-up had, to follow. During the past eleven years, they rewrote the record books as one of the biggest all girl bands of all time. The Spice Mama’s are back to spice up your world one more time with their greatest hits album.
The album kicks off with their debut smash hit “Wannabe” echoing “yo, I’ll tell you what I want, what I really want” jogging your memory back to the peak of the Spice age, into a guilty pop pleasure. What’s amazing is how the sultry “Say You’ll Be There” is more than a guilty pleasure for anti pop fans.
“2 Become 1” is such a perfect adult contemporary hit, with its old Skool R&B flavour and Motown influences, making this track a perfect summer sing-a-along song. “Too Much” finds the Spices dealing with emotional troubles, lyrics like “Love is blind, as far as the eye can see. Deep and meaningless, words to me.” depict the girls are human after all and very much in touch with their girly feelings too.
Their new track titled “Headlines” is a typical Spice Girls track which sees the Spices dig deep to emulate the Pussycats Dolls. A great tune regardless, with a genuine inspiring massage: “Believe in yourself and act now.”
The rest of the album isn’t as catchy as those five singles, but it is still an irresistible, flawlessly crafted pop album that gets by on the skills of the producer and the charisma of the five Spices.
But as one can expect from any greatest hits album, the Spice Girls Greatest Hits album is actually well produced. There are fifteen songs on the greatest hits album and you might find yourself wondering if you’ll go into Spice overload, but then you remember you waited 11 years to remind yourself what the madness was all about.
And with all the dancing, singing, reminiscing and girl-power, you'll have just enough to take you through another 11 years, until the next greatest hits album from the Spice Mums. |
