It has to be springtime in Sugababe-ville: They’ve recently had a massive Greatest Hits Tour, a brand new studio album and one of the biggest hits of the year with the mega single “About You Now”. The British trio Sugababes returned to the recording studio in the summer of 2007 to work on a new album: “Change”. This is the girls’ fifth album, packed with 12 tracks that range from dancing delights to the soothing and sentimental. The album is the first to feature all three of the girls’ vocals on all the songs.
"About You Now", made history for the Sugababes when they became the first girl band ever to top the UK Singles Chart on downloads alone. The song also broke the record for the biggest jump to the number 1 spot. The song itself combines "pop", "rock" and "electro", much like other songs produced by Dr. Luke. The other tracks on the album produced by him include “Surprise”, and “Open the Door”. All three songs feature the same quick-paced deep electro bass lines. (Perhaps the word I’m looking for here is “funky”?) The man is an absolute genius when it comes to making “funky” songs.
Although there is an up-beat electro element on the album, the girls also show off their vocal talent in more reserved, but no less entertaining ballads like the title track “Change”. They most certainly have come a long way since the days of “Push the Button” and “Hole in the Head.” Even though those songs weren’t bad, it seems that as soon as we’re tired of the old stuff, the Sugababes present new material to listen to until… well… the next album.
We’ve seen many artists trying to “change”: Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue, and Britney (who might have taken ‘change’ a little too far.) The Sugababes’ album may be named “Change” – but the trio is still together and they’re still making great music. The group has attained platinum album sales from five of their albums in their native UK. “Change” is fun, without trying to make a statement. The Sugababes’ latest album makes for sweet listening pleasure. |
