Celebs

Jeffrey Stevens, Jacaranda 94.2 presenter:

Remember opening the fridge door uses maximum energy so restrict it to the absolute essential minimum to conserve energy.

Then all the regular like rather use the microwave instead of the oven, shower instead of bathing, etc.

Fiona Coyne, The Weakest Link presenter:

1. Turn off all the water-features and fountains on your property and think of them as bird baths instead
2. Sell your house with the pool and move to a seaside property. Despite the shocking bond expenses you still save because you won't need a pool, as the ocean never runs out of energy, and hence you don't have to use a pool pump
3. When you have bought your seaside property you will have such a hard time servicing your bond repayments you won't be able to afford food, hence you won't have need to use the stove
4. Drink only red wine. This way you don't need to use a fridge or a kettle.

Tasha Baxter, singer:

To save electricity I only listen to Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark. I am also working on an unplugged album.

Tove Kane, Jacaranda 94.2:

My energy saving tip sees us travelling back in time. Back to a time where kids played outdoors without electricity to fulfil their entertainment needs. My son – like a few kids I know – is an energy hog: all lights on, listening to his ipod, playing his wii, with a DVD on his other screen, computer on and mini fridge in his own lounge while he boils the kettle for tea. I’ve gone back to basics with Jesse – choosing to play in the garden, enjoying our dogs in natural light and spending our own physical energy. And guess what – he prefers time with me over his wii!

Tessa Ziegler:

I fill a thermos jug with boiling water once in the morning and use that for the rest of the day. I only boil the kettle again when it is finished or too cool. I also switch off the geyser in the morning and only switch in on again before going to bed at night. I switch off all plugs to the microwave, kettle, cell phone charges when I don't need them and the oven isolator switch, as the over has a light display on it which also draws current when not in use.

Loyiso, singer:

With R&B music being so romantic and smooth, I like to come home, turn off all the lights, open a bottle of good red wine and light candles all over the house to set the mood. Come on Jacaranda 94.2 listeners. Switch off the lights, light some candles and make a difference!!!

Willem Botha, Afrikaans Idols 2006 naaswenner:

Ahoi. Ek het onlangs my eerste huis gekoop en besef nou egter eers hoe baie elektrisiteit mens onnodig gebruik. Wees slim.

Darryl Desmarais (Stephen in Egoli):

Get rid of old appliances, they use more power than the modern appliances which are a lot more energy efficient. Also turn off your oven at the wall. Some old ovens self-clean using energy for many hours a day and that will increase your bill and usage.

Krynauw Otto, former Springbok and Blue Bulls lock:

I switch my geysers off every morning at 5am and back on every night at 9pm. I fill the kettle with cups now - making sure I don't boil unnecessary water. I'm also more strict on the kids leaving lights on.

Albert de Wet, singer:

Being Afrikaans, I found braaiing 6 days a week helps to reduce power usage and it improves your social life. Come on Jacaranda listeners, gooi daai tjop op die braai!

Liezel van der Westhuizen, Jacaranda 94.2 aanbieder:

Ek het vir my ‘n kar ‘charger’ gekoop vir my selfoon en i-pod. Nou laai ek my selfone of i-pod terwyl ek in my kar werk toe ry.

Ewan Lehanie, Jacaranda RMFM:

Play more golf to avoid temptations at home using power to keep yourself entertained.

Mags van der Westhuizen, Jacaranda 94.2:

When I go away on holiday or even away for an event, and it's for longer than a day, I turn off my geyser which helps in saving energy. At the office, I've also ensured that all the light bulbs are changed to the longer lasting energy saving bulbs.

Laurika Rauch, sangeres:

Neil Sandilands, Feast of the Uninvited:

Kahn Morbee from The Parlotones:

Here’s a challenge for all Jacaranda 94.2 listeners: After the workday’s finished and everyone’s on their way home, make sure you switch off all the office lights and aircons.

Snotkop, sanger:

Hey Wassup!!!

Kom nou Jacaranda 94.2 luisteraars, maak ‘n verskil.

Ryan Van Den Berg, lead vocalist and guitarist for the Waiting Room:

We would recommend candle lit dinners to save energy. It will only cost you a few rand, its romantic and it puts you in the good books with your wife… Great success!!!

Joe F, sanger:

Doen jou deel!

Karen Wessels, sangeres:

Hoekom los jy ligte aan as jy uit ‘n vertrek stap? Sit al die onnodige ligte af.

Nadia Valvekens (Pippa in Binnelanders):

Franci Swanepoel (Toeks in Binnelanders):

Steve Hofmeyr:

Ek’s ‘n koffie junkie. Kragonderbrekings het my daarvan af.

Paul Du Toit (Malan in Binnelanders):

Gebruik Body Heat in plaas van ‘n warm kombers.

Dianne Broodryk, Jacaranda 94.2:

I have decided that my pool motor does not need to be on every single day - I have switched from automatic to manual start-up and it now runs for 4 days a week and still looks great! Unfortunately the pool heater is not being used at all, but I am now enjoying my martinis in bed instead of in the pool and believe you me, they have more kick or should I say bump! Come on Jacacaranda listeners, lets just change a few minor things in our lives and we will sail through this little gedoente!

Jay from Eden:

Make every day Valentine’s Day. Use more candles, it’s very romantic and scores big on the ‘you did something right’ chart, if you know what I mean guys! Adopt your own philosophy on how you can save energy and I don’t mean by sleeping… I started off really simple. If you’re not using it, switch it off!! It’s amazing how just that brings your utility bill down. Save it!

Maurice Carpede, Jacaranda 94.2:

Try eating raw uncooked food (fruit and veggies)… saves energy and its healthy too… but if you’re gonna eat meat… please cook it first…
