Review

Just last week, someone I know commented on how you realise that time flies when you’re still enjoying NOW 47 and you notice NOW 48 has hit the shelves. Very true. Luckily it bears testimony to the fact that between the end of 2007 and the first three months of 2008, enough good material came out to justify the choc-a-bloc 48th volume of NOW.

With 13 of the 21 songs relying on the vocal talents of the fairer sex, NOW 48 definitely belongs to the ladies. Leona Lewis proves she has the X Factor by getting things going with Bleeding Love. With hints of Mariah and Whitney when they were on top of their game, one wonders if Leona’s gonna become the next Queen of the Ballad. The inclusion of Alicia Keys adds a bit of spice to NOW 48. Not being a huge fan of her music, I can honestly say that “No One” is genuinely a song that grew on me and I might pluck up the courage to listen to a full album of hers. Kylie’s “2 Hearts” proves that Kylie still has her finger firmly on the pulse of what is labeled “catchy.” And when Rihanna’s “Don’t stop the music” starts, you want to drop your car’s suspension, add some bling mags and move your driver seat as far back as possible while cruising the streets. It’s also good to hear that Britney is offering a piece of herself on NOW 48 and that Idols 2007 winner Jody gets a bit of added recognition by being included on the hottest compilation series ever, Pop Shop included.

And just before NOW 48 starts sounding like the latest “Sisters are doing it for themselves” compilation, things get balanced by adding Timbaland and One Republic’s “Apologize” and Lenny Kravitz’s “I’ll be waiting,” both these tracks on their own making NOW 48 worth the asking price. And if you haven’t bought yourself Mika’s debut album, Relax, Take It Easy… Just get NOW 48, because his latest high pitched vocal wonder is also on NOW 48.

What HHP is doing on NOW 48 is not clear. Because “Music n Lights” is not what I would call music. But by the time you get to track 21, you could just skip and start at 1 again.

Well done Sony BMG for releasing another fantastic NOW. So when next you find yourself browsing around a shopping centre thinking you might hop into your favourite music retailer just to see what’s new, make sure you follow Maroon 5’s advice and not go home without NOW 48.
