Coco - Colbie Caillat

A 22-year old beautiful female singer-songwriter from Malibu – it sounds like something we’re quite used to by now… until you hear her sing. Unlike all the usual musical exports we get from the US nowadays, Colbie Caillat is not just a pretty face and her debut studio album Coco is proof of that.

The whole album is worth listening to and it’s one of those you’ll appreciate as a whole, not just for the hits we hear on the radio. Caillat emphasises this on her official website: “It wouldn’t feel right to have my name on a record that was just a few good tracks and then lots of filler.”

She’s been categorised in the same musical genre as Norah Jones and Jack Johnson which should give you a pretty good idea of her musical talent and the feel of the album.

It’s amazing to think that Caillat only started singing when she was 11 after she heard Lauryn Hill and the Fugees’ version of “Killing Me Softly”. Luckily she took her dad’s advice to heart when she learnt to play the guitar at 19; he told her that the people who command real respect in the music business are the songwriters. Her dad probably knew what he was talking about, he’s Ken Caillat who co-produced Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tusk albums.
Caillat is noted for her MySpace profile which led her to become the number-one unsigned singer in her genre for four months. She was then able to pick and choose a record label that would suit her and her style.
In an interview on her official website she mentions that she’s unsure why “Bubbly” is such a massive hit worldwide. “I guess it’s the simplicity of the lyrics and the melody. It’s meant to make you feel good and everybody can relate to it.” It must be just that,
