Hearing about all the excitement and hype surrounding Adele and her debut album 19, I was expecting to be blown away with her voice and music. But, I was disappointed and to be honest, bored at times.
However, if you’re into soul music, you will probably become a huge fan of the artist who was awarded with the first ever Critics’ Choice award at the 2008 Brit Awards.
The 19 year old singer songwriter hails from the well known Brit School for the Performing Arts in South London, the alma mater to other singers like Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and Katie Melua.
“Chasing Pavements”, the first single from this album hit the music world by storm and topped charts all over the world. She’s been called “the new Amy Winehouse” by the British press and names the legendary Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James as her musical influences. The lyrics on the album impressed me, but the delivery failed to do so.
There’s no doubt in my mind, this girl’s got talent and her feet are still firmly on the ground, something I respect. In a recent interview with Times Online she addressed the interesting subject of fame: ‘If I was walking in a straight line, people would walk round me. People fussing over me. Giving me my water in a bottle with a straw. I was like, I can do it myself. I’m not Mariah.”
One song that really stood out for me was “Hometown Glory” – her second single soon to be released, and a song inspired by her hometown, Tottenham.
I’ve mentioned that I’m not a fan, but you never know… it could grow on me. I might wake up and actually start to like this album, like the rest of the world. |
