Here we have Britain’s fastest selling debut album for 2008 so far, with sales of 180 000 units. Welsh singer Duffy is making quite a name for herself at the moment. Her debut album 'Rockferry' has already earned her a Number 1 single in 'Mercy' and without a doubt seems to be causing quite a stir in the music industry.
Beginning with title track 'Rockferry', Duffy kicks off the album in an amazing style. It is such a powerful track and certainly grabs your attention right from the first bar. She's got one hell of a voice dazzling you with her unique vocal style. She is only 23 but the strength of her voice is so powerful that you have to wonder how she’s going to top her debut album one day with the follow up.
The fresh funky flavour of the hit single 'Mercy' certainly rocks my boat, it is this track that I feel gives the album its finest moment. The chorus is pure magic and is really what makes this track so powerful and together with the commanding drumbeat throughout the track, makes it linger in your head long after the song stopped playing.
With so many average artists out there doing well for themselves at the moment, it is only right that 2008 is the year for Duffy to really make her mark. Her music possesses great maturity and unlike some of her counterparts Duffy does not rely on senseless sentences to get her message across. Album tracks such as 'Warwick Avenue' and 'Serious' are finely put together, providing music that is excellent to listen to. “Rockferry” is an enjoyable album and never does Duffy disappoint with her larger than life voice.
There are ten tracks on “Rockferry”, each as well crafted as the other. Duffy is very talented and should certainly have a great career ahead of her. This may be her first album, but I'm sure that it won’t be her last. If you're a fan of great music, then I think you'll find that Duffy is amongst the best and her music is therefore definitely well worth a listen.
