Review

This special release album is a brilliant compilation, featuring 40 of some of the biggest international chart-toppers and local standouts from 2000 to 2007.

This stunning collection really takes you back with an eclectic mix of pop, easy listening, R&B and pop-rock, and contemporary music lovers will have to look pretty far and wide to find a better mix of songs that dominated the airwaves over the last seven years.

The double album features an easy fusion of new artists making a name for themselves in the years between 2000 and 2007, as well as existing artists delivering excellent contemporary radio hits.

Nelly Furtado opens Disc One with the techno groove of the somewhat haunting “Say It Right”, shortly followed by the super poppy “Grace Kelly” by Grammy-nominated Mika and Justin Timberlake teaming up with Timbaland to bring “SexyBack”.

Balancing out the pop, Disc One also features a selection of R&B grooves with the likes of Ne-Yo and Usher. Not forgetting to rock, the compilers have also included Daughtry, Gorillaz and The Killers.

Disc Two offers a similar medley of hits with the first track busting into Outkast’s ultra catchy “Hey Ya!” followed by Britney Spear’s huge hit “Toxic” and the uptempo “Smile” from Lilly Allen.

Grooving along, Mattafix’s big hit “Bit City Life” also makes an appearance along with Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi”.

The boy bands are represented on the collection with the inclusion of Westlife’s “Unbreakable” and Backstreet Boys’ “Incomplete” – both hits marking the guys’ return to the music scene at the time.

The second disc also features a healthy helping of local with Freshlyground, Jamali, Watershed, Arno Carstens and Just Jinjer all adding local flava to the mix.

Providing an excellent perspective on the hits of the first part of this decade, this album won’t necessarily leave you saying “Gee do you remember that song…”, but it will most probably leave you shaking your booty to that song.
