If you’re still thinking of Alanis Morissette as the angry woman of rock who poured her heartache into her debut album Jagged Little Pill, you need to wake up. It’s been 13 years since this Canadian singer-songwriter blasted onto the world stage with her angry revenge track “You Oughta Know”. Since then she’s changed a lot musically - some of the changes good, but unfortunately some of them weren’t that successful.
Even though her style of music has changed and developed a lot over the years, her lyrics are still deeply emotional and filled with those raw and honest words that we got to love.
The album’s first track is “Citizen of the Planet” and a good opener as it starts slowly, but builds up to a decent track with feeling and a whole lot of attitude.
Guy Sigsworth (Bjork and Madonna) produced this album and his electronic influence is obvious in tracks such as “Straitjacket” and “Giggling Again For No Reason.” It’s a powerful influence, but nonetheless a good one.
An album by this seven time Grammy Award winner would not be complete without Alanis showing her softer side and she does just that on “Torch”. She gives us a glimpse into her other side with truthful lyrics about missing that someone special combined with a calm, soft melody.
My favourite track is “Underneath” which also happens to be the first single off the album. It’s a catchy tune with deep words and it’s doing very well on the worldwide charts at the moment.
With Flavors of Entanglement Alanis is back and, as with Jagged Little Pill, post a relationship that didn’t work out. It truly seems as if her best work is written after a share of heartache. I know it’s selfish and unkind of me, but I can’t wait for her heart to be broken again.
