So how many typical “Love Song” type compilation CDs do you have in your collection?
You know, those with about 16 songs on the tracklisting… some of them from romantic movie soundtracks, some of them pure 1-hit wonders…
Put them away, because here is the definitive Love Song Compilation CD. Or rather, 5 CD’s. Yup, 100 songs, all by original artists, guaranteed to get anyone into some sort of, well, mood for lurrrrvvvveeeee. And this collection is going for a song – you can find it selling for under R200 at most music retailers. Although it is debatable whether some of the songs featured would qualify as love songs, but that would be any person’s objective/subjective opinion.
Slip any of these CDs into the player this winter and I’m willing to bet my electric blanket that the heater, the red wine, the fireplace… whatever you use to stay warm, won’t be the only thing that will cause temperatures to rise a tad. Some of the best-known love songs / dance floor openers are all present… Wet Wet Wet’s “Love is all around,” Daniel Bedingfield’s “If you’re not the one,” Extreme’s “More than Words,” Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ “Up where we belong,” and The Temptations’ “My Girl” to name a few. And what would any compilation like this be without featuring something by Barry White? It’s in this sort of scattered approach that this release’s true appeal lies… there’s something for everyone… from some of the best love songs from recent years going way back to contributions by The Four Tops, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Buddy Holly.
One of my favourite love songs of all time finally gets recognition on a CD dealing with the topic of love (and calling it Essential is sheer genius)… Inxs… Never Tear Us Apart. Play this one loud…forget for a moment everything you’ve ever read about creating the right mood… pump up the volume on this one track and then return to looking into each other’s eyes.
A word of warning though… if you’ve just come out of a relationship or seriously heart-broken, put this one away till you’ve met that special someone again. It could make you miss someone you’re trying to forget. Generally then, a good buy. Although it should probably have been called 99 Essential Love Songs, because Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus should not be considered essential listening by anyone.
