The 80’s gave us The Bangles. The 90’s gave us The Spice Girls. And somewhere between the last bit of the 90’s and now, Atomic Kitten became everyone’s favourite girl band. But whereas The Bangles and The Spice Girls could safely say they held the throne, Atomic Kitten was facing some serious rivalry.
Welcome to the world of Keisha, Amelle and Heidi, the three lovely ladies who makes up UK girl band Sugababes. With three triple-platinum UK albums (“Angels With Dirty Faces”, “Three” and this, their recent album “Taller In More Ways”) and four number ones (Freak Like Me, Round Round, Hole In The Head, Push The Button), a BRIT Award, a Q Award, a Smash Hits Award and two Elle Style Awards, the Sugababes have already secured their place as the most successful girl band of recent times.
The three-piece have survived two line-up changes during their seven years, with their latest incarnation seeing the arrival of Amelle Berrabah in December 2005, following founding member Mutya Buena’s departure. This album of course will be remembered for the first single, “Push the Button” that became a worldwide hit over the last few months. It was followed by “Ugly,” a song that will no doubt be any insecure teenager girl’s anthem. This is the released version of “Taller in More Ways,” now featuring the 3rd single “Red Dress,” getting extensive play on MTV. It seems to be a recent trend to re-release an album shortly after its initial release to include a new single that’s making waves. People who bought this when it first came out can quite rightfully feel a tad peeved. Because apart from “Push the Button,” “Red Dress is definitely the second strongest track on the album. Looks like “Follow me Home” will be the next single.
In the words of Keisha, “It’s definitely a team effort. We’re not just puppets on a string or the product of somebody else’s imagination. This album is us.”
