If you’re a huge, make that massive, fan of James Blunt, it’s rather hard to write an objective review of this album.
This live release is the follow up to the multi-million debut album, 'Back To Bedlam'. It comprises a CD of a concert in Ireland, and a DVD featuring tracks filmed at the BBC alongside all of Blunt's music videos to date, with a short documentary on the making of each.
The DVD features great reproductions of the now famous album tracks complete with orchestral accompaniment on some. Also on this disc are all the videos for the single releases plus some short films showing the making of and interviews.
Disc two is a collection of tracks recorded live in concert in Ireland. There are several solo versions of songs from his debut album alongside his covers of the Pixies' 'Where Is My Mind' and Crowded House's 'Fall At Your Feet'. Highlights include ‘Cry’, ‘Tears and Rain’, ‘High’ and ‘Goodbye My Lover’. There are a few unreleased tracks here as well and it's good to hear him sing new material.
For an artist who has only released one album, this is already a sort of Greatest Hits for the uninitiated. Listeners just warming to James Blunt may be better off picking up his debut album Back to Bedlam, but for fans looking for a glimpse of the "real" James Blunt, Bedlam Sessions is gold at the end of the rainbow. It is a worthwhile buy with this combined CD and DVD proving to be excellent value for money when most CD's cost this much alone.
