The year is 1995. A female Canadian singer unleashes an angry approach to popular music on an unsuspecting world. Without even trying, she becomes the spokesperson for women everywhere who always battled to tell the men in their lives exactly what was wrong with them and their relationships. Fast forward to 2006. A collection of her Greatest Hits is released and guys are still genuinely amazed (and thankful) at the fact that Alanis has not mobilised an army of disgruntled women/wives/girlfriends yet.
All the hits from her first release “Jagged Little Pill” are included. “You oughta know,” “Ironic,” and “Hand in my pocket” are probably still the 3 songs Alanis will have to top with every new release… she has never bettered the brilliance of these 3 songs. Not that her later efforts were poor. I didn’t say that Alanis. Please forgive me Alanis. Didn’t mean to offend you. Uhhh, where was I? Oh yes, her later efforts… She followed up her first bunch of hits with “Thank You,” “Hands Clean” and “Uninvited,” the best thing in the movie City of Angels apart from Nicolas Cage’s confused facial expression throughout the movie. For a while it almost looked like Alanis was going to be a Soundtrack favourite. Even “Still” from the movie Dogma (in which Alanis played God) is included on this collection. And there there’s some real strange inclusions… Alanis gives us her take on the 1928 classic “Let’s do it (Let’s fall in love).” Hearing her powerful voice informing us that even educated fleas do it is interesting, but what it’s doing on a collection of her greatest work is beyond me. Especially if it is at the expense of real hits like “Precious Illusions” and “All I really want.”
Main reason for buying this? Well, if you don’t own any Alanis, this is the one to get. Especially since her movie soundtrack songs were only previously available on the soundtrack albums. The other reason is for her cover version of Seal’s “Crazy.” Great… just what we needed. An angry chick now going crazy.
To think, another superstar launched her career by giving her a record deal… Madonna’s Maverick Records signed her on back in 1995 and for a while Madonna must have had sleepless nights about being the music world’s biggest superstar. Now that, my dear friends, is ironic. It’s like ten thousands spoons when all you need is a knife…
