Doo Be Doo. There, just typing those 3 words has probably contributed to selling another 25 copies of Nomvula. This CD was released some months ago already. Initially, when first single ‘Doo Be Doo’ (another 25 copies sold right there) came out, I wasn’t blown away. Yes, it was catchy. But I don’t know… just didn’t make me wanna find out more about this band. So that made me possibly the only person in the country who felt that way. Because the rest of SA went “bos” and wanted to know who they were, where they could get the song, etc. Silly me. I’m glad to say that it took me a while, but I got hooked. However, ‘Doo Be Doo’ (sheesh, we’ve sold 75 CD’s already in the first paragraph of this review) is not the main reason you should get this CD though (that is assuming you’re one of the thousand who hasn’t bought it yet.)
Nope, the reason for getting this is for one of the biggest songs of 2006! It’s one of the biggest local songs ever. In fact, it’s one of the biggest songs ever as the crowd at the Loftus Robbie concert would’ve told you. It’s right up there with ‘Weeping’ by Bright Blue. Maybe the following lyrics will give you a hint:
“What do I do with all these precious hours dreaming of you at night?
I’d like to call you sometime.
I’d like you to need me one time.
I’d like to have you all the time.”
‘I’d Like’ is simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Considering all songs are composed by the members themselves, there’s definitely a bright future ahead for this band. This is what Proudly South African means… Forget the chutney and the 100% fruit juice you have to ship out to ex-pats every now and again… I would buy this CD and really make them miss home. Okay, I’m mean. But I am tired of getting the mails from London telling me about a new Brit band that’s the biggest thing ever. Or the ones about “an Ozzie band we’ve just discovered, where in the meantime they’ve been going for years, mate!”
What’s the rest of the CD like? Well… lekker really. It’s jazzy, funky, vibey… blerrie perfect actually! Good going guys… here’s looking forward to whatever you dish up next. ‘I’d Like’ to have a few of your CD’s in my collection one day. And just to help you sell even more of your debut CD, ‘Doo Be Doo.’ ‘Doo Be Doo.’ ‘Doo Be Doo.’
