The hair. Apart from the voice, you cannot miss the hair. The voice is bigger than the hair. But only just. And that says a lot about the voice… and the hair. Let’s just be thankful that Chris Isaak never inspired a generation of young men to ask for the Chris Isaak look when visiting the barber.
What we should be thankful for is this inspired artist’s contribution to the music world over the last few years. When I got this CD I thought to myself “Okay, I know ‘Wicked Game’ and ‘Blue Hotel…’ so it’s bound to be a torturous exercise listening to the rest…” Well, I was wrong… This CD rocks! It kicks of with ‘San Francisco Days’ and although I’ve never been to San Francisco the song almost had me looking for my holiday snaps from the time I went. Classical! ‘Somebody’s Crying’ is next, a song he wrote in a closet at a party. Apparently he was at a party and he ended up hiding in a coat closet with a borrowed guitar. People at the party were trying to get him to exit the closet and get over his ex, but he ended up staying there writing this song while the party went on without him. How do I know this? Well, this is the nice thing about the CD booklet… Chris explains the story behind each song in the booklet… really cool.
‘Only the Lonely,’ a cover of Roy Orbison’s big hit is dedicated to Roy who helped Chris when he started out his musical career. David Lynch’s movie “Wild at Heart” did not only do wonders for teenage boy puberty the world over… it also spawned Chris’s biggest song, ‘Wicked Game,’ no doubt the song most people would buy this CD for.
It’s the perfect CD to slip into the car CD player heading home after a hard day at the office. And when you get to track number 4, ‘Baby did a bad bad thing,’ resist the urge to pick up a hairbrush and sing along, moving seductively… He’s been going for just over 20 years and this Best Of is set to get a whole new generation loving the voice… Just hope the hair doesn’t catch on.
