My Santa letter for this coming festive season is already written. Just need to mail it… Goes something like this:
Dear Santa
I was a good little boy all year long… in fact, been pretty good the last few years… except for that one incident late last year with the chocolate body paint… But Santa, all I want is for Madonna to do a concert in SA. Is that too much to ask Santa? Please Santa. I’ll pay for my own ticket. Please just get her out here.
Till then, this latest release by Madonna would have to do. Recorded live in Paris back in 2004 as part of the Re-Invention Tour, this CD and DVD combination shows why Santa can send the tie and socks to someone else this year. Some interesting choices by Madonna to do the songs she did on this tour… you can tick of the big hits like “Vogue,” “Like a Prayer” and “Music.” Also included on the CD is the song “I love New York” which was going to be released on her next big studio album. Interestingly Madonna gave audiences her take on John Lennon’s “Imagine” and it is quite a haunting experience hearing The Material Girl pull it off. To me the tracks that come across best on the CD is “American Life,” a song from a CD that Madonna got a lot of bad reviews for (maybe it was destined to be a strong live track) and The Bond theme “Die Another Day.”.
This package is really worth the price for the DVD that’s included. However, if you don’t like your Live Concert DVD’s to be interrupted all the time with interesting little tidbits about the star or the concert itself, you will be frustrated. Directed by Jonas Akerlund, the DVD does however offer an interesting insight into Madonna’s life… you get to see her interact with hubby Guy Ritchie backstage… you see her form a huddle with the dancers and backing singers to pray before she goes onstage… we visit her dad and stepmom where they do what parents do best… be proud of their children… and then we see Dad backstage praying with them. And here we thought Papa don’t preach.
Madonna knows how to put on a good show… she knows what her fans want. But I’m going to tell you a secret… if you like Madonna, no, if you love Madonna, you should get this. It’s missing some of her biggest songs, but the fact that the documentary style DVD makes you feel like you’ve been around to Madonna’s place for dinner, certainly makes this a great buy for fans.
PS: Santa, just pop me a mail about my gift please… chimney blocked.
