Yes, Life is a rollercoaster. And Tomorrow may never come. And clearly this realisation rubbed off on our Mr Keating. Because here we have his latest CD and there’s almost no uppity track on this album. The closest we get to a jovial little ditty is the track “Back in the Backseat.” Naughty Ronan.
First single though is “All over again,” a duet featuring Kate Rusby. Yes, that Kate Rusby. The Kate Rusby no-one’s ever heard of. Seriously though, she’s been around for a while, but she’s not a familiar name in SA. Thanks to our boy Ronan, that could change as their voices are really perfect for the duet-thing. But, it’s not the typical first single from a new Ronan album we’ve come to expect and one day when he releases a double CD of his 40 greatest hits, this might be number 43.
But then Ronan goes and does the almost unthinkable. He does a cover of one of the best movie soundtrack anthems of all time. And sorry Ronan, not a bad cover, but “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls is just one of those songs you better do one helluva improvement on when you decide to cover it. This comes off as an Idols Top 24 performance. Harsh? Maybe… but maybe in this lies the complement. A Ronan release usually signals chart domination for a few months where we question life, double check whether our burial plans are sufficient or telling everyone who cares to listen that we generally just love every single day. This time round, there are no instant WOW moments on a Ronan CD.
But that’s not gonna stop the fans from buying this. It’s easy listening… unobtrusive… even thoughtful at times. Just needs a vital spark or two to lift the mood slightly. Love your work Ronan… just some of your work more.
