Some bands just love South Africa. They just keep coming back and back. Good thing they’re good bands. Like Live… with another tour around the corner to promote this, their latest studio album, South Africans can gear up for another world-class act touring our shores.
Wikipedia, the Internet’s Free Encyclopedia best sums up the whole Live phenomenon: Characterised by an earnest approach to anthemic rock and a spiritual zen reminiscent of Joshua Tree-era U2, Live climbed from modest Modern Rock success to the mainstream spotlight worldwide on the strength of their 1994 breakthrough album, the 6-million-selling Throwing Copper.
Indeed, it was always going to be difficult to follow the success of their 1994 smash album. But they did it soon afterwards with their next album “Secret Samadhi.” And then another couple of albums were released appealing more to the die-hard fans. This latest release is one that will have a broader appeal again in my opinion, possibly even converting a few new fans. Lead single “The River” is a calmer Live on top form and is proving quite popular with Jacaranda 94.2 listeners. “So she pulls me close and she holds me oh so tight… Then suddenly out of the blue she starts singin’… Ooo baby let my lovin’ ease your pain.” Power stuff. My other favourite track is “Get Ready,” a song that should be credited as one of the most beautiful love songs this year.
Although hailing from York, Pennsylvania, LIVE remains only moderately popular in terms of record sales in the United States. In fact, lead singer Ed Kowalczyk, readily admits that much of their current sales come from places in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. So, Ed and fellow band members Patrick Dahlheimer, Chad Taylor and Chad Gracey, South African audiences are waiting for your return. Give us Live, Live!
