“I’ve been dying inside… little by little… nowhere to go… but goin’ out of my mind in endless circles… runnin’ from myself until you gave me a reason for standing still.”
The album's recurring themes of love and hate are nowhere clearer than on the title track and first single “What’s left of me.” Now, who is Nick Lachey? Well, he once was a member of boyband 98 Degrees, a band who just never managed to crack it locally. Interestingly enough, this is Lachey’s second solo release and is backed up by memorable production and Nick's distinctive vocals and was written in the aftermath of his break-up with singer Jessica Simpson.
As another reviewer pointed out on amazon.com: “Those looking for sunshine, lollipops, and boyband rainbows should probably stay away from this album, but anyone looking for a finely crafted, cathartic look at a failed relationship and its aftermath will find this to be a rewarding listening experience.” The one thing Lachey makes no secret about is the fact that he loves what he does. He even goes on to tell his fans so in the album sleeve notes just in case they weren’t sure…
Track number 6, “Beautiful,” in my mind is the strongest song on the CD with lyrics that show with some more exposure Nick could become a serious contender in the “young, broody, born with a good voice and not afraid to use it” stakes. “I see you’re looking for yourself tonight…” In those few words lies Nick’s biggest challenge. If he can find himself, he will go on to greater things… The thing is, there’s just so many others who seem to be doing this sorta sound better than Nick. Take Ronan Keating for example. Or Brian McFadden. Till then, this is a welcome addition to the young male vocal category… let’s see if he has staying power.
