What? You’re still listening to NOW 43? Get with it. Volume 44 is here. It’s certainly a sign of a busy year music-wise when you’re still enjoying the “current hit” status of NOW 43 and you realise to your shock that NOW 44 is filled with the next batch of big hits. So, if you had to compile the tracklisting for your ultimate summer album, if you were given free reign, who and what would feature?
Justin Timberlake? Okay, fine. He promised he was going to bring “Sexyback” and as the first song on NOW 44, he certainly manages that. In fact, within the first 4 tracks on the album, you might have to loosen your tie or switch on the aircon as the sexiness threatens to take over. Nelly Furtado’s getting all “Promiscuous” on us… and Ne-Yo’s “Sexy Love” makes you yearn for people you’ve never met. People in your own age group that is. And what is a NOW compilation without some sort of contribution from the Black Eyed Peas? In fact, they kinda feature twice on here if you take into account Fergie from the Peas’ first solo hit “London Bridge.” The other Peas track is their collaboration with Sergio Mendes on “Mas Que Nada,” one of those songs that make you wonder if you don’t have some South American blood running through your veins judging by your hip movements when it plays.
But back to who else you’d like to see on the tracklisting… Scissor Sisters? Ask nicely. Okay then, possibly 2006’s biggest cut (clever… Scissor… cut… get it?) “I don’t feel like dancin’” is also included. (But I’d still recommend you get the full Sisters album.) Want more “sexy?” Okay, how about adding two really sexy all-girl bands to the list? Let’s go for “Buttons” by the Pussycat Dolls and “Maisha” by local group Jamali. And although no-one’s quite sure what Robbie’s on about, his “Rudebox” also makes an appearance. Turn up the aircon… turn down the window… turn up the volume… turn down the urge to stop and dance in the street.
But before NOW 44 turns into “Bump and Grind volume 1,” the clever Sony BMG people also added the slower tunes that currently have “HIT” written all over them. Rihanna’s “Unfaithful,” possibly because of all the Sexybacks and Sexy Loves. Corinne Bailey Rae has “Trouble Sleeping,” maybe because of the very same reasons. And after all the “action” NOW 44 dishes up, Shayne Ward’s making “No Promises” and Nick Lachey’s wondering “What’s left of me.”
If you still haven’t bought Sandi Thom’s debut album, “I wish I was a Punk Rocker” is also included taking us all back to a time when people were a lot less upfront about their feelings for each other than half the people on NOW 44. Yeah right.
