Things not to get the Pope as gifts. A bottle of scotch. A signed Paris Hilton photograph. A Playboy subscription. And this, Madonna’s The Confessions Tour, filmed at London's Wembley Arena during her worldwide sold-out 25-city Confessions Tour (2006's top-grossing tour world-wide), a tour that shocked the Vatican and a couple of old ladies the world over for one very specific reason. I am of course referring to Madonna’s decision to sing “Live to Tell” while being crucified on, what can only be described as a disco mirror ball cross thingy. Yes, it’s controversial. But then again, I do think the mother grundies took it all out of context. Because, unlike Papa, Madonna preaches to the crowds and the world about embracing one another in love, about getting along, about forgiveness and moving on.

Not everyone’s cuppa tea, so if you think you’ll start scratching your old Madonna LP’s or drawing up petitions because of this, rather skip track number 6. Because the other 20 tracks on the DVD (including 3 set pieces featuring dancers who can, hey, act, while Madonna goes for a wardrobe change) will leave you out of breath as you marvel, no, gawk, at what the human body is capable of when it comes to dancing, jumping, crawling, gyrating… this is not Madonna’s first concert DVD to feature some of the best dance moves ever witnessed on a stage. You will simply be left astounded at how someone who’s turning 50 next year can still move the way you could the last time you dressed in PE gear and had to run, jump, crawl etc back in grade 8… And then of course she probably hand-picked the whole bunch of muscle-freaks parading as dancers on stage (it should be illegal to flex so many muscles without even trying). How these guys managed not to fall while running, jumping, crawling and gyrating over, under and through the scaffolding while Madonna urges everyone to “Jump,” is simply beyond me. They defy gravity with every pumping chorus.

The biggest part of the concert is of course dedicated to work from “Confessions on a Dance Floor.” “”Get Together,” “Sorry” and “Isaac” are all there in glittering brilliance. Madonna also confirms she has no intention of slowing down with “Let It Will Be” and the earlier mentioned “Jump.” And after about 2 hours, the concert ends off in spectacular fashion with “Hung Up,” contradicting the song’s “Time goes by so slowly” line as you’ll be left wondering where the hell time went so fast. Of course not everyone loved Madonna’s new career direction when she decided it was time to revive disco somewhat with her last studio album. The good news is that Madonna also breathes new life into “La Isla Bonita,” “Lucky Star,” “Like a Virgin” and “Ray of Light, ” a song which I for one didn’t think could be more energetic.

The CD is a condensed version of the show with 12 tracks included. The danger of this of course is that it is rather difficult to dance, jump, crawl and gyrate when stuck in traffic, even in an SUV. But it certainly makes you wanna stop at the costume shop and get that feather boa that’s on sale. As a thrower of fantasy dance parties, Madonna is peerless. The whole package should actually come with a warning on the cover: The moves in this concert are performed by professionals. Do not try to dance, jump, crawl or gyrate like this at home.
