Movie review: Adult World

Emma Roberts plays Amy who wants to be a famous poet before she hits 30. But life seems to have other ideas.

What’s the story? Adult World is a quirky comedy about a young girl named Amy (Emma Roberts) who thinks of herself as a great writer of poetry.  However, her attempts at getting published are taking longer than expected and in the interim, she finds herself a job at a local sex shop called Adult World.  Her relationship with her co-workers forms the main story, whilst her encounters with a has-been writer, Rat Billings (John Cusack), are the highlights of the movie.  Although slapstick at times, the movie will keep you entertained and laughing all the way through to its feel-good end.

Who’s in it? Emma Roberts (Wild Child, We’re The Millers), who is actually the niece of Julia Roberts is the reason I wanted to see this movie.  She is a great actress and easy to watch.  John Cusack (Con Air, High Fidelity) is another favourite, as he is just so likeable.

Who’s the director? Scott Coffey

What will you remember? The scenes in the sex shop that form the setting for Amy and her co-worker Alex (Evan Peters) relationship, as well as all the weird stuff customers ask to purchase.

What’s the best scene? When Amy goes to give Rat Billings a piece of her mind…drunk!

What’s the best line? When Amy is sitting at the dinner table with her parents and her parents are unaware of the nature of her work.  Upon hearing she has landed herself a job; they congratulate her on entering the ‘adult world.’

With what piece of information can you impress your friends? After meeting on the set of Adult World, Evan and Emma are now engaged in real life!
