1958 - Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" was released.
1960 - Elvis Presley recorded "Are You Lonesome Tonight."

1964 - The Beatles made music history by holding the top five places in the singles charts with: "Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout," "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Please Please Me."

1966 - David Bowie's first solo single, "Do Anything You Say," was released.

1967 - Jimi Hendrix began his first British tour with Cat Stevens.
1967 - The cover of the Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was staged and photographed.

1969 - The Beach Boys announced that they were suing their record company for over $2 million in royalties. They also announced that they were starting a new record label called Brothers Records.

1970 - The "Woodstock" movie premiered in Hollywood.

1974 - The British pirate radio station Piccadilly Radio went on the air.

1976 - In Memphis, Bruce Springsteen jumped a fence at Graceland in an attempt to see his idol, Elvis Presley.

1978 - Paul Simonon and Topper Headon of the Clash were arrested in London for shooting pigeons from the roof of a rehearsal hall.

1979 - The Who released the album "The Kids Are Alright."

1983 - Kirk Hammett joined Metallica.

01 April 1984 - Marvin Gaye, at the age of 44, was killed by his father . Gaye's father received probation after he pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

1985 - David Lee Roth left Van Halen to pursue a solo career.

1989 - Guns N' Roses released their single "Patience."

1991 - Rod Stewart was surprised onstage by Elton John, who was wearing a dress.

1998 - Dave Navarro left the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

2002 - It was announced that the 19-year-old band Megadeth had broken up. The break up was due to an injury to Dave Mustaine's left arm and hand that had left him unable to play guitar.

2009 - "Guitar Hero: Metallica" was released.
