32 kg of drugs found at OR Tambo

SA Revenue Services custom officials have made the second largest bust of Khat in the country.

SARS spokesperson Siba Mfabe said 32 kilograms of Khat worth R4.1 million were ceased at the OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.

Mfabe said Khat contains cathinone which is similar to ephedrine and is classified as a narcotic in South Africa, which makes it an illegal substance.

"SARS Customs detector dogs reacted positively to the Khat consignment which was detected before it could be loaded onto a Cape Town bound cargo flight," Mfabe said on the find.

He said Monday's drug bust was the third narcotic success that customs had recorded in the past week around the country.

Officials last month seized 72 kilograms of Khat with an estimated street value of R9.1 million.

The case has been handed over to the police for investigation and no arrests have been made.

"SARS Customs will continue to cooperate with the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies in order to ensure that individuals who act outside of the law are brought to justice," Mfabe said.
