Boycott World Cup concert

An artists' union and several organisations on Tuesday appealed for people to boycott the World Cup concert, claiming SA musicians would be sidelined.

"True" South African rhythms were not part of the line-up, the Creative Workers' Union of SA (CWUSA) and other groups told a media briefing in Johannesburg.
CWUSA president Kid Sithole said Grammy-award winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo was one of the groups excluded.

South African artists were equal in ability to international stars and the country must not be ignored on its own soil, he said.

Some of the bodies supporting the boycott call were the SA
Football Players' Union, SA National Civic Organisation, Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association, Young Communist League of SA, ANC Youth League, SA Students' Congress and the SA Liquor Traders' Association. The latter wanted to stop alcohol supply to the concert.
