Light aircraft crashes in Mpumalanga

A male and female, believed to be a married couple, have died after their aircraft crashed in the mountains near Graskop, Mpumalanga, late yesterday afternoon.

According to Mpumalanga Police, the Sezna 182 departed from Nelspruit Airfield, but never reached Hoedspruit. "The plane departed at about 4pm yesterday afternoon with two persons on board, but they never made it to Hoedspruit. We started with an investigation to see if the plane was missing. During the night we called of the search because it was cloudy and we could not see anything," says Colonel Owel Bester.

Bester says the search was resumed this morning, during which the plane was detected near the Inyaka Dam in the Bushbuck Ridge area. "It went into the mountain and into the plantations. Currently we are busy recovering the bodies from the airoplane," he explains.

Meanwhile, a helicopter has crash landed at the Rand Airport on the East Rand this afernoon. "A Robinson Helicopter had a crash-landing on the airport grounds. Fortunately when we arrived there both the pilot and the trainee had escaped the crash without any injuries, although there was quite sever damage to the helicopter," says Netcare 911 paramedic, Chris Botha.
