RUGBY

The Springboks will try and win in Brisbane for the first time in 39 years today. The world champions take on the Wallabies in their last tour match of this year's Tri Nations, on the back of two demoralising defeats against the All Blacks, and coach Peter de Villiers hogging the newspaper headlines Down Under.

The bookmakers have tipped the Aussies to win, but the Boks will know four or even five points today, with three home games to come, and the All Black defeats will be almost forgotton. Kick-off is at noon.

Meanwhile, injured Bok scrumhalf Fourie du Preez doesn't believe the result of this year's Tri-Nations will influence the Bok team's performance at the World Cup. du Preez, who is out with a shoulder injury, says the Boks just need to go back to the basics and execute their game plan better.

In Currie Cup action Western Province remain the only unbeaten team in the competition, after powering to a 42-23 win over the Leopards in Potchefstroom. Over in Durban. Keegan Daniel scored three tries to help the Sharks to a hard-fought 27-17 win over the Pumas.

CRICKET

Pakistan are 40 runs short of their first Test victory against Australia in almost 15 years and levelling the two-match series at Headingley. Set a fourth-innings target of 180 to chase after dismissing Australia for 349,Pakistan ended day three on 140-3.

GOLF

and Louis Oosthuizen's hopes of following victory at the British Open with a European Tour title remain alive after a second-round 70 at the Scandinavian Masters. The 27-year-old lies two shots behind clubhouse leader KJ Choi.

CYCLING

Britain's Mark Cavendish yesterday claimed his 14th career success on the Tour de France, coasting to victory in a bunch finish in the 18th stage...Spaniard Alberto Contador retained the yellow jersey with his eight-second lead on Andy Schleck still intact, ahead of the race's final time trial over 52km.

FOOTBALL

Manchester United central defender Nemanja Vidic has agreed a new "long-term" contract at the Premier League club. The Serbian had been rumoured to be leaving United with Real Madrid reportedly interested.

FORMULA ONE

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was quickest in the second practice session at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The Spaniard traded fastest laps with the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel, who was second, and Mark Webber who was fourth - behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa.
