The fight for the position of ANC Youth League President is expected to go down to the wire when delegates attending the 25th National Congress cast their votes.

The congress kicked off at the Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg on Friday.

The race, which used to be between four men, has now been narrowed to two following the withdrawal of Ronald Lamola and Kenny Morolong.

Collen Maine appeared to be the frontrunner as the battle for control continued. He was expected to be challenged by Pule Mabe.

Former ANCYL President Fikile Mbalula was not willing to comment on the possible frontrunner, but maintained that he has only heard of one name.

"From what the provinces have nominated...I've heard of only one name which is of Collen Maine coming from all the PGCs that have taken place," he said.

The conference comes two years after the leadership structures of the ANCYL were disbanded by the ANC.

Adding to the challenges faced by the congress, a faction from the North West on Thursday approached the High Court in Pretoria for an interdict to stop the congress from going ahead.

The faction claimed that not all their disputes had been resolved, affecting members that would vote at the congress.

The application was dismissed.
