Looting death toll at six, police say

Six people have died since looting and violence broke out in Soweto last Monday.

National police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale says among the dead is one foreign national. 

 

 

Violence erupted after Simphiwe Mahori (14) was shot and killed by a Somali shop owner in Snake Park in Soweto.

 


Shop owner Alodiaxashi Sheik Yusuf allegedly fired at a group of people trying to rob his shop, killing Mahori.

 

 

Nhlanhla Monareng (19) was gunned down in Naledi outside a shop owned by a Pakistani during a shootout with police.

 


Malawian shopkeeper Dan Mokena (74) was attacked and killed during his sleep.

 


Baby Nqobile Majozi was trampled on when a group of people looted a shop in Kagiso. 

 


Police say there no incidents of looting was reported in Gauteng on Monday night.

 


Some 178 people have been arrested in connection with the spate of looting and violence which spread across Gauteng over the last week.
