MBD 'Dis Lekker By Die See!'

Rejoice had never seen the ocean before. She wanted to witness the majestic sight of the sea in it's full glory - so intensely she put it on her bucket list. MBD seized the opportunity to make her dream a reality.

Martin Bester Drive asked you: 'Do you know anyone that has NEVER been to the ocean? Someone who has never seen the sea and smelled the fresh sea air? If you know of anyone, tell us about them.'

Anneke Weber mailed us, and told us about the tea lady at her office, Rejoice, an honest, hard-working mother who has not only never seen the ocean, but even put it on her goal card for 2013 at their office -

HI Martin

The tea lady at our office, Rejoice, has never been to the sea. She is about 45, has two grown children and has been working at our company for the past 10 years.

Our company has recently taken part on a motivational drive and we all had to write down our goals for the year ahead. As usual the staff had very elaborate goals from building a second story on a house, cycling the Epic, diving the red sea, buying a new car etc etc. Rejoice’s goal is to fly to Durban or Cape Town as she has never been in a plane and has never been to the sea.

Given the circumstances I think it is an attainable dream as she is very motivated to get to her goalbut I do not think if it will realise in the next 12 months. I think that maybe through the offer you have to let someone go to the sea it would be wonderful if you could choose Rejoice. She will be over the moon!!

Kind regards

Anneke Weber

We decided that this was a perfect opportunity to take Rejoice and a guest of her choice on a trip to Durban with us.

We contacted rejoice and she was delighted! She decided that the person whom she would most like to join her on her very first flight in an airoplane, first stay in a hotel and very first trip to the sea would be her sister Magdelene, who, like Rejoice, also has never seen the ocean.

And so it was!

After being picked up in the Jacaranda FM shuttle bus, we took Rejoice and Magdelene to Durban, flying out of OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday afternoon, and every moment of the day was a first for them.

Magdelene and Rejoice disembark aftert their first ever airoplane flight!

Soon after we landed, we dropped out bags at the reception desk of the Tsogo Sun Elangeni hotel right on the Durban Beachfront where we would be staying, and rushed to the beach - we just couldnt keep the sisters waiting any longer - they HAD to feel the sea rushing over their feet!

The incredible moment when Rejoice and Magdelene felt sea water rushing over their feet for the very first time!

And it feels gooood!

The Elangeni Hotel was superb, and we were all made to feel right at home, with breathtaking views and stunning facilities.

During our stay in Durban, our sister station in KZN - East Coast Radio treated us to some of the best hospitality we have ever had, we dined like stars, and got stuck into the feast in Umlazi township at a place called 'Chesa Nyama", which directly translates to 'Burning the Meat'. It's a place where the whole community can get together, eat good food, and have a good time. We were also joined in Durban by our friends from Star FM - the first Independant commercial station in Zimbabwe, and Phoenix FM out of Zambia, and man did we have a great time together!

This is Spiga, a little piece of awesome in Florida rd, where we had dinner on the first night!

It wasnt all play and no work, so come Monday afternoon, we broadcast LIVE from the promenade of the Sun Coast Casino, literally metres from the sea!

We did have one question though... we were happy to go to work and do our thing from Durban, but who would help Rejoice in her absence?

Turn's out, Rejoice's boss, and company CEO Barry Leonard didnt mind donning the apron whilst we treated Rejoice to the KZN experience!

Rejoices boss Barry giving a helping hand in her absence. Thanks Barry!

What a stunning time! Ahuge thank you to all involved, from Anneke to sending us her email and nominating Rejoice, to SAA for flying us all to and from Durban, Tsogo Sun Elangeni Hotel for the wonderful stay, and a huge thanks to East Coast Radio and their team for their impeccable hospitality!

We will be posting the video of the experience soon, keep an eye out and stay tuned to MBD!
