With R1 600 203.40 million in total, through pledges from corporate donations, telethon pledges from you the listener, and sms entries for our competition, Alex ‘Arod’ McMaster summited and returned safely from Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Purple Rhino project, driven solicitously by the Martin Bester Drive team’s, ‘Let’s give kili horns’ campaign.

What began as an ambitious idea, culminated in large corporate sponsorships, medium to small enterprises and empathetic listeners donating and raising substantial monies to aid in the fight against rhino poaching.

After recieveing the initial amount of R150 000 from Sun City, taken from ticket sales for the Kings Of Chaos tour, the ‘Let’s give kili horns’ campaign, driven by the Martin Bester drive team quickly mobilized and snowballed other corporate sponsors to rally with this substantial donation to increase the total amount raised to over R1 million. The Martin Bester Drive team nominated their stuntman ‘Arod’ to trek up Kilimanjaro to plant a flag full of corporate sponsor logos. Corporates jumped at the opportunity to support the cause and get their logos onto the flag.

Sun International and Clipper Sales donated R150 000 and R200 000 respectively. Babelela security and Praxos Industrial Sandblasting donated R100 000 each. Divil engineering, Quemic, Mantella trading, Protea coin group, Inoxpa, Bridgestone SA, SupaQuick tyre experts, Demacon market studies, retail network services, Imperial select, Gunsite, Aon, Numatic and Crest information systems each donated R50 000 to the cause. Thanks also to ‘Outdoor Freedom’ for kitting up the team with the necessary and essential gear.

Upon opening up a telethon to private, public and small enterprise donations, the Martin Best drive team managed to raise R333 311 in pledges, tipping the donations to the R1.5 M mark. Celebrities who gave off their valuable time and assisted in answering telephone on the day included the likes of; Dewald Wasserfall, Pierre Spies, Arno Jordaan, Ross Learmonth of Prime Circle, Hannon Bothma and our very own, Rian van Heerden from the Complimentary Breakfast show and Barney Simon from the Workzone.  Celebs, the Martin Bester drive team and our Jacaranda FM listeners are adamant that we are not going to let poaches win this fight against our rhino.

The Purple Rhino project has teamed up with the founder of Stop Rhino Poaching, Elise Daffue. We are confident that funds will be allocated accordingly to this cause. Visit http://www.jacarandafm.com/post/this-is-how-you-helped-the-purple-rhino-project/ for details on usage.

Today marked the special return of the team who successfully planted the flag but more importantly, rooted our message on the highest point in Africa. African’s will unite to ensure our rhino are not selfishly snubbed from us.

The Martin Bester drive team commemorated the safe return of Arod at the Jacaranda FM headquarters at 16:00 today 26 July 2013, with live performances from Prime Circle and the Bulls Babes, as we celebrate the companies and listeners who selflessly opened up their pockets and their hearts to the ‘Let’s give kili horns’ campaign. The Martin Bester Drive team and Jacaranda FM salute you.
