MINEWORKERS LEAVE LONMIN - Some 1400 mineworkers have left the Lonmin platinum mine in Rustenburg in the North West, as part of the mine's plan to retrench 6000 workers. 


The mine says the workers left the mine with voluntary severance packages. 


Lonmin spokesperson Happy Nkhoma says the retrenchments form part of their plan to cut costs, and they will continue to engage with those that will be retrenched...


 


WITS EFF - The EFF members who were suspended at the University of the Witwatersrand have been allowed back onto campus, following a court order by the Johannesburg High Court to set aside their suspensions. 


The EFF approached the court to have today's SRC elections postponed, so that their members can participate. 


Six EFF members have been suspended last week, following a violent altercation during a debate at the university. 


Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says, even though the suspensions have been lifted, the students can still face action...


 


RACISM AT SU - The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will meet with the Stellenbosch University on Tuesday. 


The urgent meeting follows revelations of alleged racism experienced by students and staff members at the University as revealed in the 'Luister' documentary. 


The Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, has also been invited to the meeting.

 


ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS - Anaso Jobodwana raked in a medal in the 200meter men's final at the world athletic championships in Beijing.
