Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Motherwell police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, said a 53-year-old warrant officer and 58-year-old sergeant had been arrested after 28-year-old murder suspect, Lungiswa Tsengiswe, disappeared from the Kwazakele police cells on Thursday.
Beetge said an alert was issued on Thursday when Tsengisiwe could not be accounted for.
“The acting station commander viewed the CCTV footage and it implicated the two police members in her escape,” he said.
Beetge said a criminal and internal investigation had been launched and that the two policemen, both of whom were stationed at Kwazakele police station, faced charges of corruption, aiding and abetting the escape from lawful custody and defeating the ends of justice.
They are expected to appear in court on Monday [1 June].
Beetge said anyone with information on the whereabouts of Tsengisiwe should contact the Kwazakhele police.
