DA: SABC spends R3m on choir
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
DA shadow minister of communications Gavin Davis says the revelation was in a reply to a parliamentary question which also revealed the choir sings praises to Motsoeneng.
“Minister Muthambi was at pains to emphasise that Hlaudi Motsoeneng had not in any way pressurised the choir to sing his praises. She said the verse “Hlaudi we thank you” was spontaneous and not composed under Motsoeneng instruction or influence,” he says.
Davies says the question that needs to be asked is whether the SABC can justify spending R3 million per year on a choir.
“The question needs to be asked whether the SABC can justify spending R3 million per annum on an in-house choir. Surely, it would be cheaper to commission the services of a professional choir if and when the need arises?” he says.
The Sunday times recently reported that the SABC is facing a loss of R501 million in this financial year.
Speaking at the launch of the SABC’s 24 hour news channel on Friday Motsoeneng says the SABC is financially stable.
“For the first time SABC is doing very well, financially we are stable. People who are talking about SABC collapsing will collapse themselves,” he says.
