Police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the horse and trailer truck, hijacked in Delmas on Tuesday night, was travelling along the Barberton Road towards the N4 highway when police tried flagging it down during a routine stop and search.
”[On Wednesday] the truck driver ignored the instruction by the cops and drove on, police persisted and continued to signal the driver to stop [but] to no vail,” Mohlala said.
”Upon seeing that the police barricaded the road upfront with an attempt to deny him to pass through, the driver made a u-turn and faced towards the Nelspruit direction.”
Mohlala added that police fired shots at the truck tyres during the chase.
”The truck driver tried to push the police car off the road but failed. He decide to jump off from the truck while it was still in motion and ran into the bushes, the truck came to a standstill. No one was injured.”
Police were combing the area on Wednesday night looking for the driver.
