Rush hour traffic in Durban was severely disrupted on Monday morning following three service delivery protests in the city.

One lane of the N2 highway, north bound near Cato Manor, was closed as police dispersed protesters.

Several hundred residents from Durban’s Kennedy Road informal settlement closed Umgeni Road, while protesters from the Burlington Heights informal settlement protested, affecting traffic in and out of Shallcross.

Members of the police’s Public Order Policing unit were deployed to disperse the protesters.

It was not immediately clear how much damage had been caused.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the protests on the N2 and Umgeni Road.

“We can’t say how many [protesters there are] because they block the road and then run away to another place,” he said.

No arrests have been made.
