Zuma: 'Shoes' was an outstanding footballer

"We have lost an outstanding footballer, a good role model for our youth and a committed and patriotic South African," Zuma said.

Moshoeu died on Tuesday afternoon. His agent, Glyn Binkin, confirmed his death on Twitter.

 

He was 49-years-old.

He retired from soccer in May 2014 after spending several seasons with third-tier side Alexandra United.

Moshoeu played for Kaizer Chiefs from 1988-1993 and again from 2003 until 2006.

 

He also played in the Turkish league for Fenerbahce and Bursaspor from 1997 until his return to South Africa in 2003.

'Shoes' was capped 73 times for South Africa and scored eight times.

He was one of Bafana's stand-out performers in their 1996 African Cup of Nations triumph, scoring four goals in the tournament.
