On Thursday police followed up on information about suspicious activities at a house in Tshilwavhhusiku, near Thohoyandou, and saw three people trying to run away, Colonel Ronel Otto said.
Police caught them and searched a small truck and a bakkie, leading to the discovery of over R2m worth of cigarettes.
"The origin of the cigarettes, as well as where they were destined for, forms part of the investigation."
The three, plus the owner of the house, were arrested and would appear in court soon.
In the second incident, at Motetema, two men were arrested for allegedly robbing an employee of a cigarette company who was delivering cigarettes to a shop on Thursday.
"The employee stopped to deliver cigarettes when he was overpowered by two unknown suspects who forced him back into his vehicle and drove to a bushy area where they off-loaded the cigarettes into their own vehicle before fleeing."
Two hours later, police got a report of a suspicious vehicle at Manapyane.
Police arrived at the house and two people tried to run away. The house was searched and R200,000 worth of cigarettes were recovered.
The two were arrested and would face charges of possession of stolen property.
"Investigations to link them to more incidents are continuing," Otto said.
