There was a heavy police presence at the court with officers controlling access to the court.

The 55-year old grandmother was arrested on Friday after her two-year-old granddaughter was declared dead at their home in Chatsworth's Havenside area.

Protesters from various civilian, religious, and political groups were outside the court buildings, with one group chanting "Bring back the death penalty".

Many carried placards that read "Stand up Against Child Abuse" and "Monster Mom Rot In Jail" as well as "Bring Back Death Penalty".

Numerous television crews as well as photographer were outside the court while reporters attempted to gain access to Courtroom C to cover the first appearance of the woman.
