Recent statements made by the US embassy warning its citizens touring or living in South Africa who planned to visit the Pretoria Zoo to rather not due to huge security concerns has struck a huge chord with the community of the capital city, including The Complimentary Breakfast.

 

The team has set out on a mission to change this perception by putting a plan together that will help improve the safety and security of the area’s surround the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and ultimately, #SaveOurZoo.

Mission to #SaveOurZoo

First step was to find out from the zoo what is fact and what is fiction regarding the statements made by the US embassy.

 

After having received clarity from Craig Allenby, the National spokesperson for the Zoological Gardens that the security within the zoo walls is not where the problem lies, retired SAPS specialist Bushie Engelbrecht was contacted and requested to do a full risk analysis on the area surrounding the zoo.

 

This morning, Executive Mayor of the Tshwane, Kgosientso Ramokgopa  opened up about the seriousness of the security situation and discussed a way forward to ensure that all citizens of South Africa and abroad will be able to enjoy the beauty of the zoo with peace of mind. Former top cop Bushie Engelbrecht does a full risk analysis and has devised a 7 step plan to improve the safety and security in the area’s surrounding the zoo:

 

  1. Bring additional police in on a more regular basis
  2. Improve on the police visibility in the area
  3. Increase and spread the presence of security guards throughout Boom Street
  4. Get the SAPS and the Metro to patrol on a more regular basis
  5. Focus on the area that is a block away from the zoo
  6. Implement more security cameras in the area
  7. Keep the area clean
