A young Swazi mother accused of dumping her newborn baby in a pit toilet appeared in the Tonga Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Tuesday.

Delisiwe Mhlongo, 20, originally from Swaziland but now living in KaMhlushwa outside Malalane, was not asked to plead to a charge of attempted murder, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Prosecutor Thulani Msibi said Mhlongo would be given a trial date next week.

The DNA test results were now available in court.

Mhlongo was arrested on November 4, 2013, after neighbours heard a child crying in her neighbour's pit toilet and reported the matter to the police.

Previously, lower court prosecutor Eugene Mathebula read into the court record that Mhlongo allegedly dumped her newborn baby in the toilet and went to work the following morning.

Mhlongo is out on R500 bail.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane postponed the case to September 23 for a trial date to be set.
