"The member is in hospital, he is alive," said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

She said no arrests had been made and investigations were underway.

Two police officers were shot dead and the third injured by unknown men on Sunday.

One officer died on the scene and a second died later in hospital. A third was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Providing further details, Johannesburg metro police spokeswoman Superintendent Edna Mamonyane said: "Three SAPS [SA police Service] members were shot. One apparently in the head, another in the leg, and the other in the leg."

She said the N3 between Linksfield and Vincent Tshabalala road (previously London road) had been closed off as it was a crime scene.

She urged motorists to use alternative routes.

The motive for the shooting was not known yet. The gunmen fled in a Mercedes Benz they hijacked, which was found abandoned not far from the scene.
