SA’s Tatjana Schoenmaker breaks Olympic record

South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker joined Martin Bester on 25 March 2020 to chat about the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan - where she has now done us proud!

After competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning gold medals in the women's 100-metre breaststroke and the women's 200-metre breaststroke, Tatjana Schoenmaker knew exactly what to expect ahead of the Olympic games. 

It was an exciting start to the Olympics in Japan when South Africa’s star swimmer won her 100m Women’s Breaststroke heat in 1:04.82, setting a new Olympic record!

Schoenmaker finished in a time of 1:04.82 ensuring herself a spot in the final on Monday, 26 July.  

The young athlete spoke to Martin Bester at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, with her determination to win inspiring our listeners. She told Martin Bester: “We’ll definitely be ready. What is another year of training to be better, right? I’ll definitely be ready for 2021. It’s nice to know the waiting game is over. We do have time.”
