News24 have announced a new digital subscription service, but breaking news will remain free-to-read.

The editor-in-chief of News24 spoke to Breakfast with Martin Bester about their decision to create a new digital subscription service and what’s being done across the world. 

News24 will launch a new digital subscription service that will be available to readers from August 8. 

The subscription will cost R75 per month and will give readers access to additional investigative and in-depth journalism.

Due to the global pandemic, plans to move to digital is now needed more than ever. 

Adriaan Basson admitted to Martin Bester: “The move is in line with the growing international trend to charge for online news content as part of the industry’s evolution to a new, sustainable model."

Did the lockdown have anything to do with the decision? 

“In the past decade, it was going to be the journey we will take. We have to adapt and that is why we have launched this product. We cannot afford for journalism to die with the medium. People are returning to credible sources much more than social media.”
