Covid-19 death toll nears 4 000 mark

The total number of Covid-19 infections now stands at 264 184, an increase of 13 497 new cases in the 24-hour-period leading up to Saturday night.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Saturday that the country's death toll has climbed to 3 971, with 111 new deaths recorded.

Mkhize said of the latest deaths, four were recorded in the Northern Cape, 13 in KwaZulu-Natal, 26 in Gauteng, 30 in Eastern Cape and 38 in the Western Cape.

The country’s recovery rate has improved slightly from the day before, now standing at 48%.

Dr. Andrea Julsing-Keyter, SAHPRA's Senior Manager: Medical Devices and Radiation Control, says they receive d a large number of applications for approval of antibody tests, but many of these were not consistently reliable in their results. However, the regulatory body has now given the go-ahead for the use of a rapid results test produced by a Joahnnesburg-based company Tip Top Trade.
