The government recently amended the lockdown regulations to allow informal traders to keep their shops open in order to sell essential goods.

The traders need to be in possession of a permit issued by the city.

The city's MMC for Economic Development Lloyd Phillips  says the process of issuing permits had to be suspended due to the large crowd that descended on the offices in the CBD.

"Yesterday we started with the process of issuing permits for informal traders, it was to take place until Wednesday. It is, however, unfortunate that a team from economic development experienced major challenges where a large crowd descended on Jorrisen Street in Braamfontein compromising safety and social distancing regulations.”

Phillips says some of the applicants also do not live in the city.

The traders will be allowed to only sell essential products, fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and fish as well as sweets and cool drinks.
