MultiChoice has also teamed up with the two rivals in their efforts to ease the shortage of equipment.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants held a joint press briefing on Wednesday with the Health Department and MultiChoice.

“We humbly ask our Minister of Health to accept a contribution of 100 095 masks, 350 000 surgical masks – of which 75 000 will go to the police and another 75 000 will go to the defense force, 100 000 gloves, 10 000 protective overall, 10 000 wipes and 100 000 shoe covers,” MultiChoice Group chairperson Imtiaz Patel said.

“This is our small contribution to front line workers who are the unsung heroes and heroines.”

Despite a fierce rivalry on the pitch, Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza said the two rival clubs are known to join hands on matters of national importance.

Khoza said: “In the field of play we are determined to beat each other at every encounter. We however have a history and culture of collaboration in matters of national importance.”

His counterpart and Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung said the announcement couldn’t have come at a better time, as government ramps up screening and testing campaigns.

“Our players from both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will embark on a nationwide social media public campaign in a bid to raise awareness and encourage everyone to stay at home.”

A total of 2506 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed and 34 people have died in the country since the start of the outbreak in March.
