To date, the province has 49 937 positive cases and counting.

For the first time on Thursday, South Africa's economic hub also recorded the highest coronavirus deaths in the country in one day.

Ramaphosa visited Mpumalanga on Friday to assess the province's management of the pandemic.

"Mpumalanga is still much better placed than other provinces such as the Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and KZN. I am not saying you should count your luck, because we are still amid the rising peak of infections.
