Dimphonyana Tsa Lapeng: So much more than just a pre-school

Dimphonyana Tsa Lapeng in Olievenhoutbosch has become so much more than just a pre-school. Today, it is a place of safety for vulnerable children, which is why Good Morning Angels reached out and helped

Dimphonyana Tsa Lapeng started as a nursery and pre-school in Olievenhoutbosch in 2000.

Founded by Asnath Teffo, or Mama Asie as the community named her, the Dimphonyana Centre responded to the alarming prevalence of child abuse cases in the area by registering as a place of safety, which soon evolved into a foster home. It is currently home to nine vulnerable children

Mama Asie’s daughter, Shalate, has taken over the management of the centre, which has grown and evolved over the years.

Besides the pre-school and foster care, Dimphonyana also provides:

  • After-school care and homework assistance
  • A soup kitchen supporting 450 beneficiaries, with 300 recipients aged between 6 months and 13 years
  • A community food garden that encourages small-scale subsistence farming for unemployed women
  • Children’s church, empowering beneficiaries affected by gender-based violence (GBV)

Dimphonyana is self-funded and a registered non-profit organisation. They rely on payments from parents who are able to contribute, as well as donations, and also run income-generating initiatives.

These include venue rental for workshops and church services, a charity shop, a recycling project, and the sale of produce from their community food garden.

They now have their sights set on more sustainable energy generation and need batteries to go with their donated inverter. They would also like to install a gas geyser and replace their large marquee tent, which has been a valuable income generator for the centre.

REQUEST FOR: Asnath Teffo and Shalate Ngobeni of Dimphonyana Centre in Olievenhoutbosch

ANGEL: The Good Morning Angels Fund NPC

SPONSORING: The Good Morning Angels Fund will donate R50 000 towards solar batteries, a gas geyser and a new rental tent to help them generate more income and continue caring for the children.
